mandates
The Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre is guided by mandates from the Aboriginal community in Vancouver. These mandates include:
- Reduce over-representation of Aboriginal people in at-risk or criminal circumstances
- Build community support and participation for community policing and safety issues
The ongoing approach to achieving the mandates is to:
- Offer advocacy, victim assistance, referrals, education, awareness and culturally relevant programs that promote crime prevention and safety
- Follow an Aboriginal code of ethics in all decisions affecting the society
- Establish culturally sensitive prevention and diversion programs
- Enhance related community services by building partnerships with organizations that complement the goals of the society
- Secure resources through government, private sector and foundations to maintain, improve and enhance programming
- Act as liaison with law enforcement agencies and professionals within the criminal justice system
