Michael Jacko
Youth Coordinator

Michael is Anishnaabe (Odawa/“Ottawa” Nation) from Wikwemikong, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. He is a program coordinator at VACPC, working mostly with youth and elders. Michael grew up dealing with many of the same social issues (addiction, poverty, violence, etc.) afflicting many urban Aboriginal communities today and as a result became interested in finding holistic and spiritual ways of addressing them. Michael’s main interests are living a healthy lifestyle, preserving endangered Aboriginal languages, and promoting Aboriginal cultures to Vancouver’s Aboriginal youth in an effort to address the social issues affecting them as a result of past damaging governmental policies.

Michael also understands the difficult past between Aboriginal peoples and newcomers to this continent. He takes relationship-building between the Aboriginal people and Canadian people seriously but believes this can only be achieved through non-violent communication, education, and opening the heart for forgiveness, compassion, and respect for all human beings.
